GOOD SAM PENINSULAIRES
Area: Niagara Region, SE Ontario |
|

Bytown
Good Samers received their Charter September 11, 1973. Bytown
is the oldest active Chapter in Ontario. The President is Don
McDonald.
There
are currently 46 active members (25 rigs) and 11 Honorary
Members. Honorary Members are those who were active members for
a minimum of 10 years and have had to give up camping for health
or other reasons, (death of a spouse, age etc).
We have three main campouts each
year, Victoria Day weekend, the Provincial Samboree in August
and Labour Day weekend. The Kente Kampers usually attend out
Labour Day campout. On each weekend we have pot luck dinners on
Saturday and pancake breakfasts.
The
main Chapter Charity is the Children’s Hospital Of Eastern
Ontario (CHEO). We make patch work quilts from old jeans for
the teens at CHEO. In addition we make a cash donation to CHEO
each year as well as distribute quilts and afghans to nursing
and retirement homes in the area.

GOOD
SAM PENINSULAIRES
As our name suggests, we
started up in the Niagara Peninsula and have expanded. We now
have members from Niagara Falls, Grimsby, Fort Erie, St. Davids,
Jordan, Richmond Hill, Simcoe, Princeton, Burlington, Hamilton,
St Jacobs, Hawkesville, Hagersville, Nanticoke and Cayuga.
As a group we come from
various backgrounds and lifestyles, retirement, volunteering
and working, and each has involvement in their own families,
church and community which make good stories around the
campfire. Some of our group are “snow-birds” who travel, take up
residence or caravan during the winter months in the Sunny
South.
With a possible 21 rigs we
enjoy at least 5 weekends at Vineland, Waterloo, Turkey Point,
and Guelph. We visit and tour interesting places in The Falls
and the Waterloo/ St. Jacobs area as well as going to the
theatre in Port Dover and the slots in Fort Erie. We look
forward to eating at different venues and doing pot-luck. Eating
seems to be a rewarding and fun time for us. Our Spring and
Fall meetings also involve more food (dinner meetings)
At the Good Sam Samboree
you will find us making new friends, making and serving the
coffee, tea and cookies. We also have a raffle table and run the
Chinese Auction on Sunday morning. We gladly support the Hearing
Ear Dogs and some of our members are very involved with other
fund raising endeavours.

KENTE KAMPERS:
Kingston and area
Greetings from the “Kente
Kampers”. We are a Good Sam Chapter that celebrated its 10th
Anniversary last year. We are located primarily in the “Bay
of Quinte” area of southeastern Ontario with members from
Cloyne, Bancroft, Tweed, Foxboro, Frankford, Trenton, Port Hope,
Whitby and Alliston. We currently have 14 rigs in our group,
including 12 couples and 2 singles. There are Motorhomes, 5th
wheels, Travel Trailers, and “B” class rigs in our chapter. Our
home camp is Ïroquois Trails Campground in Frankford, ON.
We
have 3 campouts yearly at our home camp. During those campouts
we try to have different agendas that include visits to local
attractions (ie. Visits to Prince Edward County, Kawartha
Slots, etc) and other sites of interest to our members and
visitors. We have a dinner and breakfast at all of our campouts
and play Bingo or games in the evening. We travel as a group to
the Ontario Samboree in July and to a campout with the Bytown
Chapter at Brockville during the Labour Day weekend. Those of us
who are unable to travel south during the winter get together
for a Xmas dinner in Stirling and monthly at members homes
during the cold months.
We
constantly strive to promote and carry out the aims of the
International Good Sam Recreational Vehicle Club. We do this by
having regular fundraising events and cleaning up a local park
every spring. We try to operate a social program that promotes
the use and enjoyment of RV’s and fellowship among our
membership. Funds from our events are donated yearly to a summer
camp for sick kids.
New
members are welcome. You may contact the chapter for more info
through our website address or talk to one of us at the Ontario
Samboree. Happy Camping.

by Phyllis Hinz & Lamont Mackay

Phyllis Hinz and Lamont Mackay, The Cooking Ladies, are back with a
truly Canadian barbecue cookbook. Continuing with their Recipes From
The Road tradition, they have traveled across Canada in their
40-foot motor home in search of the ultimate barbecue recipes. Let's
Get Grilling With The Cooking Ladies is the best barbecue cookbook
for both first time barbecuers and seasoned grillers. Nothing scary
here. Just barbecue fun. The recipes are practical. The methods are
simple. The Cooking Ladies take on beer can chicken, deep fried
turkey, griddle on the grate and a smoker box. From pizza to
meatballs to burgers vegetables, hor d'oeuvres and roasts, a variety
of recipes await the backyard chef.
This
adventure in cooking includes recipes, photographs and stories that
cover Canada's ten provinces and three territories. Let's Get
Grilling With The Cooking Ladies is a good read. It looks as
wonderful on a coffee table as it is practical beside the barbecue.
Phyllis,
from Ontario, and Lamont, from British Columbia, are members of the
International Food, Wine & Travel Writers Association. They
co-author culinary travelogues and feature articles that appear in
Canadian and American publications. After 20 years experience in the
restaurant business, The Cooking Ladies sold their houses, their
businesses and most of their belongings in order to satisfy their
appetite for adventure and the pursuit of regional cuisines.

RV How-To and "Life-on-the-Road"
Sharlene "Charlie" Minshal,
widowed at 45, left Michigan four years
following the death of her husband and almost 26
years of marriage. She sold their property, quit
her nine to five job, moved into a RV, and the
rest is major adventurous history. During the
following 19 years of full-time RVing solo
around North America, she has traveled over
350,000 miles in all the fifty United States,
seventeen Mexican States, and all the Canadian
Provinces and Territories except Nunavut, which
doesn't have a road leading to it. |

My last trip to Alaska was in 2001 and I'm sure there
have been a few changes here and there, roads straightened or paved,
towns growing, businesses coming in or fading away, things that have
happened between each of my trips to Alaska in 1987, 1992 and 1996.
Basically, things don't change all that much but even at that, some
places are more "Alaska" than others. I have my favorites, as you will
discover. I get a Christmas card every year from the Postmaster at Hope.
Linda is busy with a young family but still takes the time to
communicate with this person who is so enamored with the little village
of Hope. It is a nice connection.
I'd like to go back this summer to make a revision
but time will tell whether I can make that effort or not. At any rate,
the adventures in RVing Alaska range over the four trips and take you
along most of the roads in Alaska and along the Canadian route.Sharlene

1000 Islands/St Lawrence Seaway |

Known internationally as an area of
spectacular vistas, the 1000 Islands and St. Lawrence Seaway
offer visitors a multitude of activities from festivals and
events, outdoor recreation, wonderful shopping and dining,
world-class attractions and so much more.
U.S. visitors can access the region at any of three
international bridge border crossings. Kingston is the western
gateway to the beauty of the Islands and the largest city in the
region. Plan to explore the other communities within this region
including Gananoque, Brockville, Rockport and the 1000 Islands
Parkway, Prescott and Cornwall. Take a 1000 Islands cruise
available from Kingston, Gananoque, Rockport or Brockville and
cruise among the more than1870 Islands (yes, there's actually
more than a 1000) and see the spectacular island homes up close.
For years the 1000 Islands have been a millionaire's
playground with many making this area their summer retreat. The
grandest structure in the Islands is Boldt Castle located on
Heart Island. Accessible by water taxi, tour and private boats,
the castle has been restored and features the Boldt Yacht House
on Wellesley Island and six impressive structures.
And of course, the 1000 Islands and St. Lawrence Seaway are a
great place to enjoy the water - boating, sailing, canoeing,
kayaking, jet skiing, scuba diving, water taxis, charters,
casino and cruises are all here. The St. Lawrence River is a
major inland water route for majestic ocean-going ships. The
Iroquois Locks, the only locks in the St. Lawrence Seaway system
to be located in Eastern Ontario, are a great place to see
majestic Lakers and ocean vessels from all over the world.
The
outdoor enthusiast will appreciate the St. Lawrence Recreational
Path, which stretches over 75 kilometres, the majority of which
follows the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River. The path begins
in Lancaster, travels west to Cornwall and winds through the
rolling terrain toward Long Sault. The path then follows the
island causeway of the Long Sault Parkway and continues to the
Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Ingleside, then
arriving at Upper Canada Village and on into Morrisburg.
The 1000 Islands and St. Lawrence Seaway – a world class
destination waiting to be explored.
